During the Middle Pleistocene, the Early Paleolithic culture, indicated by the hand axe, flourished in Europe, Africa and parts of Asia. Since the 19th century, it has been classified as the Chelles culture, which had crude hand axes, and the Acheulean culture, which produced more advanced stone tools, named after two type sites in France. However, it was later discovered that the stone tools at the Chelles sites were mainly from the Acheulean culture, and the term Chelles culture was replaced in Europe with the Abbeville culture, named after a site on the banks of the Somme.
