Longhouse - Longhouse (English spelling)

A long house found mainly in Southeast Asia and Melanesia. Usually, many families live in one longhouse. In mainland Southeast Asia, it is found among the Kachin and Karen people of Myanmar (Burma), the Sedan, Ma, Non, and Lade people of Vietnam, and the Temiar people of Malaysia, and in the islands of Southeast Asia, it is found among the Batak people of Sumatra, the Iban, Land Dayak, Kenyah, Kayan, Murut, and Dusun people of Borneo. Among them, the Iban longhouses are famous, and some are up to 200 meters long, with dozens of families living in them. In Melanesia, longhouses are found mainly on the coast of New Guinea. Small longhouses are also found among the Iroquois, the indigenous people of North America.

おもに東南アジアからメラネシアにかけて分布する長大な家屋。通常、一つのロングハウスには多数の家族が居住する。東南アジア大陸部では、ミャンマー(ビルマ)のカチン人、カレン人、ベトナムのセダン人、マ人、ノン人、ラデ人、マレーシアのテミアル人などに、また、東南アジアの島嶼(とうしょ)部では、スマトラのバタック人、ボルネオのイバン人、陸ダヤク人、ケンヤー人、カヤン人、ムルット人、ドゥスン人などにみられる。なかでも、イバン人のロングハウスは著名であり、数十家族が居住し、長さ200メートルにまでなるものもある。メラネシアでは、おもにニューギニアの海岸部にロングハウスがみられる。北米先住民のイロコイ人の間にも、小規模なロングハウスがみられる。
