Nijō Tameyo - Nijō Tameyo

A poet of the late Kamakura period. His posthumous Buddhist name was Myoshaku. He was a provisional Grand Minister of State of Shonii (Senior Second Rank). He was the son of Fujiwara Tameuji. He learned waka poetry from his father and grandfather Tameie, and took a traditional stance that favored an elegant and clear style of poetry. Tameuji and Tameyo's lineage was the direct line of the court poets known as the Nijo family, and was in sharp conflict with the Kyogoku and Reizei families, who were branch families of the Nijo family. In particular, he was in fierce conflict with Kyogoku Tamekane, who was trusted by the Jimyoin line for his fresh style of poetry, and he also had a lifelong feud with Reizei Tamesuke over the issue of ownership of Hosokawa Sho. Tameyo was supported by Emperor Gouda of the Daikakuji lineage, and at his command he compiled the Shin Gosenshu in 1303 (Kagen 1) and the Shokusenzaishu in 1320 (Gen'o 2). His daughter Tameko was also known as a poet, and was favored by Emperor Godaigo, giving birth to the parents Takanaga and Munenaga. The four heavenly kings of his school were Ton'a, Joben, Kenko, and Keiun, and Tameyo's descendants and school formed the mainstream of medieval poetry. He wrote a book on poetry called Waka Teikin and a family anthology called Tameyoshu. He was also skilled in linked verse, and his works can be seen in the Tsukubashu.

鎌倉後期の歌人。法名明釈(みょうしゃく)。正二位権大納言。藤原為氏(ためうじ)の子。父や祖父為家に和歌を学び、優美平明な歌風をよしとする伝統的立場にたった。為氏・為世の家系は、二条家と称せられる堂上(とうしょう)歌道家の嫡流で、庶流の京極(きょうごく)家や冷泉(れいぜい)家とは鋭く対立した。とりわけ、清新な歌風で持明院(じみょういん)統に信任された京極為兼(ためかね)とは激しく対立し、また細川庄(しょう)の領有問題をめぐって冷泉為相(ためすけ)と生涯不和であった。為世は大覚寺統の後宇多(ごうだ)院に支持され、その命を受けて1303年(嘉元1)『新後撰(しんごせん)集』を、20年(元応2)『続千載(しょくせんざい)集』を撰進した。娘為子も歌人として知られ、後醍醐(ごだいご)天皇の寵(ちょう)を受けて尊良(たかなが)、宗良(むねなが)両親王を生んだ。門下の四天王として頓阿(とんあ)、浄弁、兼好(けんこう)、慶運(きょううん)がおり、為世の子孫や門流は中世歌壇の主流派を形成した。歌論書に『和歌庭訓(ていきん)』、家集に『為世集』がある。連歌も巧みで、その作品は『菟玖波(つくば)集』にみえる。
