Sakakita [village] - Sakakita
A village in Higashichikuma District, central Nagano Prefecture. Population 2,401 (1995). A mountain village located in the Chikuma Mountains. Aside from a small area of lowland along the Omi River, a tributary of the Sai River that flows northwest through the center, the village is mostly undulating, with over 50 settlements scattered between 500 and 900 meters above sea level. In the early modern period, the Hokkoku Nishiwaki Highway ran through the village, and Aoyagijuku flourished. Currently, the JR Shinonoi Line runs through the village. The main industry is agriculture, with rice, livestock, and vegetable and tobacco cultivation thriving, but nearly 85% of the residents are part-time farmers, and many commute to Matsumoto City and Nagano City.
