A state in northeastern India. Its area is 87,676 km2 and its population is 68,080,000 (1991). Its capital is Calcutta. It was established in 1947 when India and Pakistan separated from each other, taking into account the Hindu areas of the British province of Bengal. The current border with Bangladesh was determined based on the Hindu and Muslim populations at the time, so the shape of the state, especially north of the Ganges River, is extremely narrow and irregular. The center of the state lies south of the Ganges River, in the Bhagirathi-Hugri river system.

インド北東部の州。面積8万7676km2，人口6808万(1991)。州都はカルカッタ。1947年のインド･パキスタン分離独立に際し，英領ベンガル州のうちヒンドゥー教徒地区を範域として成立した。現在のバングラデシュとの国境は，当時のヒンドゥー，イスラム両教徒の人口に基づいて決定されたため，とりわけガンガー(ガンジス)川以北の州域の形態はきわめて狭長かつ不規則である。州の中心は同川以南のバギラティ･フグリ川水系にある。
