A state in northeastern India. Its area is 87,676 km2 and its population is 68,080,000 (1991). Its capital is Calcutta. It was established in 1947 when India and Pakistan separated from each other, taking into account the Hindu areas of the British province of Bengal. The current border with Bangladesh was determined based on the Hindu and Muslim populations at the time, so the shape of the state, especially north of the Ganges River, is extremely narrow and irregular. The center of the state lies south of the Ganges River, in the Bhagirathi-Hugri river system. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
