Nishibetsu River

Nishibetsu River
A river in eastern Hokkaido. It is 74 km long and has a drainage area of ​​442 km2 . It originates at Nishibetsudake, southeast of Lake Mashu, flows eastward, carving out a plateau covered with volcanic ash, creating a peat bog, and empties into Nemuro Bay at Betsukai. The river basin is part of the Konsen wilderness, and was the center of development in eastern Hokkaido. It has long been known for salmon fishing, and salt-cut salmon was sent to Edo and presented to the shogun.

北海道東部の川。長さ74km,流域面積442km2。摩周湖南東の西別岳に発し,東流して火山灰におおわれた台地を刻み,泥炭湿地をつくって別海で根室湾に注ぐ。流域は根釧(こんせん)原野の一部で,道東開拓の中心。古くからサケの捕獲で知られ,塩切鮭は江戸にも送られ,将軍に献上された。
