A river in eastern Hokkaido. It is 74 km long and has a drainage area of 442 km2 . It originates at Nishibetsudake, southeast of Lake Mashu, flows eastward, carving out a plateau covered with volcanic ash, creating a peat bog, and empties into Nemuro Bay at Betsukai. The river basin is part of the Konsen wilderness, and was the center of development in eastern Hokkaido. It has long been known for salmon fishing, and salt-cut salmon was sent to Edo and presented to the shogun. Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
