Hayashi Fubou

Japanese: 林不忘 - はやしふぼう
Hayashi Fubou

Novelist. Born in Sado, Niigata Prefecture. His real name was Kaitaro Hasegawa. His younger brother was the novelist Shiro Hasegawa. He dropped out of Hakodate Junior High School just before graduating because he was involved in a strike at the school. In 1918 (Taisho 7), he went to the United States and studied English literature for seven years while working part-time. After returning to Japan, he published "Kuginuki Fujikichi Torimono Memo" (1925) in "Tantei Bungei" and other publications, and from 1927 (Showa 2) serialized "Shinban Ooka Seidan - Suzuki Genjuro no Maki" in the "Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun," solidifying his foothold as a writer. In 1933, he serialized the sequel, "Tange Sazen," in the "Mainichi Shimbun," creating a unique protagonist, Tange Sazen, a one-eyed, one-armed swordsman, which gained overwhelming popularity among readers. Using three pen names, he wrote period fantasy novels under Hayashi Fubo, detective novels and family novels such as "This Sun" (1930) and "Constellations on Earth" (1932) under Maki Itsuma, and "Medieval Japanese novels" such as "Homeless Texas" (1929) under Tani Joji.
