Yan Shu (English spelling)
[Raw] Junka 2 (991)
[Died] Zhihe 2 (1055). Politician and poet of the Northern Song Dynasty in Chang'an, China. Born in Linchuan, Fuzhou (Jiangxi Province). Court name: Tongshu. Together with his son Yan Jidao, he is known as the "Second Yan." He composed at the age of 7, and took the first Song Dynasty Jinshi examination for young boys at the age of 14. The following year, he took the court examination and was awarded the Tongshinshi title by the then Emperor Zhenzong, and appointed as a regular scribe in the Ministry of Secretariat. He was trusted by Zhenzong and Renzong, and promoted to Privy Councilor and Prime Minister. However, he was demoted after being slandered, and served as governor of Yingzhou, Chenzhou, and Xuzhou, but returned to Chang'an due to illness and died in the first month of the following year. Renzong is said to have been so saddened by his death that he refrained from politics for two days. His posthumous name was Yuan Xian. He excelled in poetry and prose, and as a poet he inherited the elegant style of poetry from the Tang and Five Dynasties, making him one of the leading writers of the time. His works are said to have numbered 240 volumes, but only 136 poems from the anthology "Pure Words" and one volume of his posthumous writings remain. Fan Zhongyan, Ouyang Xiu, and Kong Daofu were his disciples.
