...With the help of Louis Feuillade, who succeeded Alice Guy, the world's first female director, as head producer and director, Gaumont completely overtook Pathé and became the king of French film by the mid-1910s. The pinnacle of this was Feuillade's action series, which ranged from Fantomas (1913-14) to De La Roux (1915-16) and Judex (1917), and were not only a box-office success but also enthusiastic artists (especially the surrealists, including Breton and Aragon). Aragon's first novel, Anice or Panorama (1920), has a chapter entitled Action, in which he pays homage to action series, calling them "spectacles that are truly appropriate for our times."
