Gun Powder Plot

…a folk event held every year on November 5th in England. In 1605, the Gun Powder Plot, a plot by Catholics to blow up Parliament and assassinate King James I, was uncovered, and Guy Fawkes (1570-1606), believed to be the perpetrator, was arrested. To commemorate this, large bonfires are lit in the streets, and a strange straw doll made to look like Guy Fawkes is set on fire with fireworks and thrown into the fire. This custom has continued for many years, celebrating the discovery of the plot and the safety of the king.
