Japanese: ニシキヘビ(錦蛇) - ニシキヘビ

A general term for large snakes belonging to the Boidae family, subfamily Pythoninae. It is often used to refer to the group of snakes in the genus Python . The subfamily Pythoninae has 22 species in five genera that are widely distributed in Africa, tropical Asia, New Guinea, and Australia, of which 10 species commonly known as Ouda (king snake) or python belong to the genus Python and live in the same distribution area as the subfamily Pythoninae. As the English name python comes from Python, a giant snake that appears in Greek mythology, the genus Python includes four species that are over 5m in length.

ボア科ニシキヘビ亜科Pythoninaeに含まれる大型ヘビの総称。とくにそのうちのニシキヘビ属Pythonに含まれる一群を指すことが多い。ニシキヘビ亜科は5属22種がアフリカ，熱帯アジア，ニューギニア，オーストラリアに広く分布し，そのうちオウダ(王蛇)，またはパイソンの名で一般にもよく知られる10種がニシキヘビ属に含まれ，亜科のものと同一分布域に生息する。　英名のpythonがギリシア神話に登場する巨大なヘビ，ピュトンに由来するとおり，ニシキヘビ属には全長5mを超えるものが4種含まれる。
