A term used in architecture. A rotunda or large hall with a dome. Originates from the Greek tholos. Representative examples include the Pantheon in Rome and Palladio's Villa Rotonda as a residential building. Chiswick House (1725) in London and the United States Capitol in Washington DC are other modern examples.
