A scholar of Japanese literature and Japanese language education. Born in Yutaka Village, Nagano Prefecture (now Anan Town). After graduating from Nagano Normal School (one of the predecessors of Shinshu University), he completed a course in Japanese literature at Tokyo Imperial University. After working as a secondary school teacher, he served as a professor at Tokyo Woman's Christian University and Hosei University, and as the first director of the National Institute for Japanese Language and Linguistics. In Japanese literature, he particularly studied the works of medieval writers such as Tsurezuregusa, Zeami, and Dogen, and wrote works such as Medieval Things and Their Development (1961) and Zeami's Theory of the Arts (1974). In Japanese language education, he wrote Kokugo kokubun no kyoiku (Education of Japanese Language and Literature) (1929), which discusses the structure of reading and its education, as well as Kotoba to sono bunka (Words and Their Culture) (1947) and Kokugo kyoikugaku no kozo (Concept of Japanese Language Education) (1951).
