It is made by pounding or crushing the New Year's Kagami mochi. Later, the name also came to be used for thinly sliced mochi shaped like sea cucumbers. The same mochi cut into small cubes is called arare mochi (arare), and by the beginning of the Edo period, the custom of making mochi specifically for kakimochi or arare mochi had become established. According to the Yoshu Fuzhi, the mochi made at Anyoji and Sorinji temples in Maruyama, Kyoto, was famous as Maruyama kakimochi. It was made by pounding the mochi in the harsh winter, slicing it thinly when it was half-dry, and drying it in the shade, and it was sent far away as a local specialty.
