Finley, J.

…In any case, these primitive suspension bridges had a structure in which the deck was directly attached to the cables, making them extremely flexible. The first to build what could be considered the origin of the modern suspension bridge was American James Finley (1762-1828), whose Jacob's Creek Bridge, completed in 1801, had a rigid bridge girder. This girder gives the suspension bridge rigidity and distributes the load acting on it, and is called a stiffening girder. …

From [Bridge]

...A little later than the Menai Bridge, G. Stephenson, the inventor of the steam locomotive, built the world's first railway bridge, and in 1950 his son Robert built the huge Britannia Bridge, the forerunner of today's box girders, over the Menai Straits with a span of 140 meters. Meanwhile, in the emerging nation of America, bridge technology made great strides in the 19th century, and in 1801 James Finley (1762-1828) built the first suspension bridge with the form of a modern suspension bridge. From around 1820, various truss structures were invented and put into practice. Then, in 1874, JB Eads built a steel arch bridge over the Mississippi River in St. Louis, and the construction of this bridge made full use of a number of innovative construction methods, including compressed air caissons and cantilever construction of bridge girders.
