Mausoleum of Galla Placidia

Located adjacent to the north side of the Basilica of San Vitale in Ravenna, Italy, this building is said to be the tomb of Galla Placidia, wife of Western Roman Emperor Constantius III. It is a Byzantine building of simple composition, made of brick with a cruciform plan, a central dome and vaults on the four wings. The interior is magnificently decorated with beautiful mosaics in dark blue tones, and the largest of three sarcophagi from the 5th to 6th centuries is said to be the queen's coffin, but this has not been verified. It was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 as one of the "Early Christian Buildings of Ravenna."

イタリア，ラベンナのサン・ビターレ聖堂の北側に隣接する，西ローマ皇帝コンスタンチウス3世の后ガラ・プラキディアの墓と伝えられる建物。煉瓦造りで十字形の平面をもち，中央にドーム，四つの翼部にボールトをかけた明快な構成のビザンチン建築である。内部は濃青を基調とする美しいモザイクで荘厳に飾られ，5世紀から6世紀の三つの石棺のうち一番大きなものが后の棺と伝えられるが，実証されていない。「ラベンナの初期キリスト教建築物群」の一つとして 1996年世界遺産の文化遺産に登録。
