…It is an abbreviation of deep scattering layer(s), and is translated as deep sea scattering layer or deep sea sound wave scattering layer. Since the 1930s, when echo sounders started to be used, sound waves were sometimes reflected from a layer several hundred meters shallower than the actual seabed and recorded on recording paper, and this was called a false seabed, false bottom image, ghost seabed, etc. This layer is called DSL (DSL's) because it scatters sound waves in the deep sea. …
