Spoonbill (English spelling)

Japanese: ヘラサギ(篦鷺) - ヘラサギ（英語表記）spoonbill

A general term for birds of the Ibis family in the order Ciconiiformes, or the subfamily Plataleinae of the Ibis family. The white spoonbill, Platalea leucorodia (illustration), is about 86 cm long. At first glance it is a wading bird that resembles a heron, but it has a distinctive, large, long, spatula-shaped beak. The name spoonbill comes from this beak. Its entire body is white, and the crest and underside of the neck of its reproductive plumage are pale yellowish brown. In winter plumage, there is no crest, and the underside of the neck is also white. The beak is dark yellow, and the legs are black.
