A village in Onuma County, western Fukushima Prefecture. Population 4,331 (1995). Located in the southwestern part of the Aizu Basin, the plains consist of the alluvial fan of the Sagase River and the floodplain of the Tsurunuma River (Miyagawa River). Many new rice fields were developed on the plains in the early modern period, and since the end of the Meiji period, land consolidation has been promoted, making it one of the largest rice paddy areas in the prefecture. In the foothills of the southwest, mainly in the Yoneda area, ginseng is cultivated, which was introduced by the early modern lord of Aizu to promote industry. Other crops grown include vegetables, flowers, and wine grapes. In 1926, the Japanese National Railways Aizu Line (now the JR Tadami Line) was opened and Niitsuru Station was opened, and the Shinyashiki area to the east of the station is the center of the village.
