A non-cold-tolerant aquatic perennial plant of the legume family. It is widely distributed in tropical Asia, Africa, and South America. It is also known as Kaijinsou (sea god grass). Its specific name, oleracea , means edible vegetable, and while it is not widely cultivated in Japan, its young shoots are eaten as vegetables in Indochina, India, tropical Africa, and other places. In addition, like Mimosa pudica, it closes its leaves when touched, so it is sometimes used as a teaching material in schools and is also viewed as algae in aquariums. It has thick, spongy stems and pinnate compound leaves, and produces spike-like, deep yellow flowers in summer. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
