Niitsu [city] - Niitsu
This old city occupies the center of the Echigo Plain in central Niigata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1951. The city center developed as a market town during the Edo period. After the Meiji period, the Niitsu oil field was developed, and it reached its peak from 1906 to 1917, but has declined in recent years. In the southern part of the city, there is Sekiyu no Sato Park, and the World Museum opened in 1988. Vegetables and tulips are cultivated in the rural areas. It is a key transportation hub, with the Shinetsu Main Line, Uetsu Main Line, Ban'etsu West Line, and Ban'etsu Expressway passing through it, and in recent years residential development has been progressing. In March 2005, Shirane City, Toyosaka City, Nakakanbara County's Kosudo Town, Yokogoshi Town, Kameda Town, Nishikanbara County's Iwamuro Village, Nishikawa Town, Aikata Village, Katahigashi Village, Tsukigata Village, and Nakanokuchi Village were incorporated into Niigata City. 78.28 km2 . Population 67,679 (2003).

新潟県中部,越後平野のほぼ中央部を占める旧市。1951年市制。中心市街は江戸時代,市場町として発達。明治以後新津油田が開発され,1906年―1917年最盛期を迎えたが,近年は衰退した。市南部には石油の里公園があり,1988年に世界館が開館した。農村部は野菜とチューリップの栽培が盛ん。交通の要衝で,信越本線,羽越本線,磐越西線,磐越自動車道が通じ,近年宅地化が進んでいる。2005年3月白根市,豊栄市,中蒲原郡小須戸町,横越町,亀田町,西蒲原郡岩室村,西川町,味方村,潟東村,月潟村,中之口村と新潟市へ編入。78.28km2。6万7679人(2003)。
