This old city occupies the center of the Echigo Plain in central Niigata Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1951. The city center developed as a market town during the Edo period. After the Meiji period, the Niitsu oil field was developed, and it reached its peak from 1906 to 1917, but has declined in recent years. In the southern part of the city, there is Sekiyu no Sato Park, and the World Museum opened in 1988. Vegetables and tulips are cultivated in the rural areas. It is a key transportation hub, with the Shinetsu Main Line, Uetsu Main Line, Ban'etsu West Line, and Ban'etsu Expressway passing through it, and in recent years residential development has been progressing. In March 2005, Shirane City, Toyosaka City, Nakakanbara County's Kosudo Town, Yokogoshi Town, Kameda Town, Nishikanbara County's Iwamuro Village, Nishikawa Town, Aikata Village, Katahigashi Village, Tsukigata Village, and Nakanokuchi Village were incorporated into Niigata City. 78.28 km2 .
