The epitaph is inscribed on the ossuary of Shonagon Ina Omura (662-707). The ossuary is a spherical vessel made of gilt bronze, and the epitaph inscription is engraved radially around the circumference of its hemispherical lid. The inscription consists of a long preface that describes Omura's origins, official career, and achievements, and an inscription that praises Omura's origins, personality, and achievements, and mourns his death. According to the preface, Omura was a descendant of Emperor Senka and the son of Ina Kagami. He became Shonagon during the reign of Emperor Mommu, and in 701 (Taiho 1) he also served as a chamberlain. In 705 (Keiun 2), he became Sashoben, and in November of the same year he was appointed as Echigo Castle governor, where he was responsible for pacifying the Emishi.
