Daisuke Namba

An anarchist of the Taisho period. The perpetrator of the Toranomon Incident. Born on November 7, 1899, as the fourth son of Namba Sakunoshin, a member of the House of Representatives from Yamaguchi Prefecture. In 1919 (Taisho 8), he moved to Tokyo, attending a preparatory school, and living near the slums of Yotsuya after attending various public and private junior high schools in his hometown and failing the high school entrance exam. He was strongly influenced by socialist writings, Kawakami Hajime's essay "Fragments" (April 1921 issue of Kaizo), and materials related to the High Treason Incident, and began to approach anarchism and criticize society. In April 1922, he enrolled in the humanities department of Waseda Senior High School, but dropped out after about six months, experienced the life of a day laborer, and eventually embarked on the path to becoming a terrorist. On December 27, 1923 (Taisho 12), he waited for Prince Regent, Crown Prince Hirohito (Emperor Showa), who was attending the opening ceremony of the 48th Imperial Diet, at Toranomon Gate, approached his car and shot him with a walking stick gun (Toranomon Incident), but the bullet missed his target and the prince was unharmed. Namba Daisuke was arrested on the spot, and on November 13 of the following year, the Supreme Court sentenced him to death for high treason, and the sentence was carried out on the 15th.

大正時代の無政府主義者。虎の門事件の犯人。明治32年11月7日、山口県選出衆議院議員難波作之進の四男として生まれる。1919年（大正8）郷里の県立、私立中学を転々とし、高校受験にも失敗して上京、予備校に通い、四谷(よつや)の貧民窟(くつ)近くで生活する。社会主義的な著作、河上肇(かわかみはじめ)の随想的論文「断片」（『改造』1921年4月号）や大逆事件関係資料などを読み、これらに強く影響を受け、無政府主義に近づき、社会に批判の目を向け始めた。22年4月第一早稲田高等学院の文科に入学したが、半年ほど在学ののち中退し、日雇人夫の生活を体験、やがてテロリストの道に進んでいった。23年（大正12）12月27日、第48帝国議会開院式に臨む摂政(せっしょう)宮皇太子裕仁(ひろひと)親王（昭和天皇）を虎ノ門で待ち構えて乗用車に接近してステッキ銃で狙撃(そげき)した（虎の門事件）が、弾丸は命中せず、宮は無事であった。難波大助はその場で逮捕され、翌年11月13日大審院で大逆罪として死刑判決が下され、15日に刑の執行を受けた。
