Born: November 19, 1875 in Honolulu, Hawaii [Died] June 6, 1956, Washington, DC American archaeologist, explorer, and politician. Since 1906, he has led the Yale University Expedition to search for and investigate the ruins of the Inca Empire on several occasions, mainly in the Andes Mountains, and in 1911 he discovered the ruins of Machu Picchu in search of the legendary city of Vilcabamba. He served as Lieutenant Governor of Connecticut from 1922 to 1924, and was elected Governor of the state in 1924. Shortly thereafter, he was elected to the United States Senate, and was re-elected in 1926. In 1951, he was appointed by President Harry S. Truman to serve as a loyalty examiner for federal employees. His major works include "Inca Land" (1922) and "Lost City of the Incas" (1948).
