Ouida

Japanese: Ouida
Ouida

…Fantasy, which invites children into a land of fantasy, blossomed beautifully with C. Kingsley's The Water-Born (1863), followed by L. Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland (1865). Children's novels also followed T. Hughes's Tom Brown's School Life (1857), R. Ballantine's Coral Island (1857), Ouida's A Dog of Flanders (1872), and A. Sewell's Black Horse Tale (1877), and reached completion with R. L. Stevenson's Treasure Island (1883). Stories dealing with imaginary worlds were succeeded by J. Ingereau's Mopsa the Fairy (1869), G. MacDonald's The Country Behind the North Wind (1871), R. Kipling's The Jungle Book (1894), E. Nesbit's The Sand Fairies (1902), K. Graham's The Good River (1908), J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan and Wendy (Peter Pan) (1911), and W. de la Mare's The Three Monkey Princes (1910). E. Farjeon's Martin Pippin in the Apple Orchard (1921) wove a beautiful fabric of fantasy and reality.
