A French real estate credit bank founded in 1852. Its basic business is to invest funds raised through bond issuance in long-term mortgage loans. The bank started out as a private joint-stock bank, but in 1854, like the central bank, the Bank of France, it adopted a system of government-appointed governors and vice-presidents, and took on a semi-public character. In the course of its growth, the bank expanded its operations from France to its colonies through its subsidiaries, opening in Algeria in 1960, Tunisia in 1909, and Morocco in 1920.
