A Russian seminary established in 1631 by Metropolitan Pyotr Simeonovich Mogila (1596-1647) of Kiev within the Pechersk Lavra (Kiev Monastery of the Caves), and later continued as a theological university until 1817. The Russian Orthodox Church under Polish rule was under attack from the Catholic Church as part of its Counter-Reformation, and Mogila, who had received his education in the West, instead adopted Latin theological methods in an attempt to strengthen the position of the Orthodox Church.
