Nanzan Shinjo Monument

Japanese: 南山新城碑 - なんざんしんじょうひ
Nanzan Shinjo Monument
A general term for a group of small stone monuments from the Silla period discovered around Namsan near Gyeongju City, North Gyeongsang Province, Korea. Six have been discovered to date, and all are kept at the Gyeongju National Museum. They are made of granite, and the largest is about 121 cm high, 47 cm wide, and 10 cm thick. In the 13th year of the reign of King Jinpyeong of Silla (591), a new stone mountain fortress was constructed on Namsan, and the inscription that begins with "Namsan New Fortress Construction Session, 26th February, Xinhai Year" (Xinhai Year corresponds to 591) dates from this time. According to the inscription, the construction was carried out by conscripting engineers and laborers such as "takumi-shaku," "mun-shaku," and "seki-to-nin" from each village throughout the country, and at the start of the construction, each group swears to bear the blame if the wall they were responsible for collapses within three years.
