Peperomia - Peperomia

Japanese:
Peperomia - Peperomia

A general term for the genus Peperomia in the family Piperaceae (APG classification: Piperaceae). It is a fleshy herbaceous plant, and while most are evergreen perennials, some are annuals. There are more than 1,000 species distributed in the tropics and subtropics, mainly in the Americas, and many of them are epiphytic. The following species are commonly cultivated. P. obtusifolia A.Dietr. is native to Venezuela and the West Indies. Its leaves are oval and fleshy. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant along with cv. Green gold, which has yellow or yellowish-white scattered leaves. P. caperata Yuncker is a small species, also known as crinkled basil green plant, and has oval, crepe-like, dark green leaves. Cv. Variegata has leaves that are white or bordered with pale pink. White emerald (cv. White emerald) is a variegated species with irregular white, gray-white, and pale pink hues, and has many variations, including Red Ripple, Nigra, and Nana. P. argyreia (Miq.) E.Morr. is also called watermelon peperomia because of the striped pattern on its leaves, and is native to southern Brazil. It was introduced in the middle of the Meiji period. P. serpens (Sw.) Loud. and its variegated species (cv. Variegata) have creeping stems that grow well, making them suitable for hanging pots. P. japonica Makino is distributed in the southern parts of Shikoku and Kyushu, but has no ornamental value.

Plants of this genus can be propagated by leaf cuttings, but variegated species may lose their variegation if stem cuttings or division are used. They are also suitable for indoor gardening, such as in terrariums and mixed plantings, and are excellent as miniature ornamental plants.

E.Morr. Loud.
