Restoration of diplomatic relations between Japan and China

Japanese: 日中国交回復 - にっちゅうこっこうかいふく

The People's Republic of China was founded in 1949, but it was not until 1972 that Japan established normal diplomatic relations with China in the Japan-China Joint Communiqué. This was the 23rd year since the new China was born, and Japan became the 79th country to recognize China. The restoration of Japan-China relations was delayed because Japan had previously taken the position of recognizing the Republic of China government in Taiwan as the legitimate government of China. In December 1951, after the San Francisco Peace Conference (September), Liberal Party President Yoshida Shigeru sent a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Dulles expressing his intention to conclude a peace treaty with the Republic of China.

中華人民共和国が成立したのは1949年であるが，日本が中国と正常な国交関係を樹立したのは72年の日中共同声明においてであった。新しい中国が誕生してから23年目の国交樹立であり，日本は79番目の中国承認国となった。日中国交回復が遅れていたのは，日本がそれまで台湾の中華民国政府を中国の正統政府と認める立場をとっていたからである。1951年12月，サンフランシスコ講和会議(9月)の後に，自由党の吉田茂総裁はアメリカのダレス国務長官あてに書簡を送り中華民国と講和条約を結ぶ意志を表明した。
