Chojuro Kawarasaki (II)

Japanese: 河原崎長十郎(2世) - かわらさきちょうじゅうろう[にせい]

Born: December 13, 1902, Tokyo
[Died] September 22, 1981. Tokyo Kabuki actor. Stage name Yamazakiya. Son of Kawarazaki Gonnosuke VIII, brother-in-law of Ichikawa Danjūrō IX. Real name Toranosuke. Succeeded to the stage name of the second at Tokyo-za in 1913. In 1919 he joined Ichikawa Sadanji II's troupe, while also starting the new theater movement and founding Shin-za. In 1928 he traveled to the West with Sadanji. In 1931 he founded the Zenshin-za theater company to encourage new theatrical activities by people with a kabuki background, but left in 1967. He showed enthusiasm in reviving the 18 major kabuki plays and playing Ganjin in "Tenpyo no Irodori."

歌舞伎俳優。屋号山崎屋。9世市川団十郎の義弟8世河原崎権之助の子。本名虎之助。 1913年東京座で2世を襲名する。 19年から2世市川左団次の一座に入り，一方新劇運動を興して心座を創立。 28年左団次とともに洋行。 31年歌舞伎出身者による新しい演劇活動のために劇団前進座を創立したが，67年脱退。歌舞伎十八番物の復活や『天平の甍』の鑑真などに意欲をみせた。
