A movement in which the Vietnamese people expanded from the north to the south from the 10th to the 19th centuries, pushing aside indigenous peoples. The Song Khoi River (Red River) Delta (Tonkin Delta), the homeland of the Vietnamese people, had already been developed several centuries before Christ, and by the 15th century had been completely developed except for some swamps and coastal areas. As a result, whenever famine occurred, large amounts of the population moved to the lands of the Cham and Khmer peoples in the central and southern parts of the country. In addition, traditional dynasties, influenced by Chinese Sinocentrism, were keen to expand into areas with different cultures. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
