Frontenac (et Palluau), Comte de; Louis de Buade
Born: May 22, 1622 in Saint-Germain-en-Laye
Died November 28, 1698. A soldier and colonial administrator in Quebec France. Prefect of New France (in office 1672-82, 89-98). He joined the army in 1635, and after serving abroad, he was appointed Prefect of New France in 1672. He had a fiery temper and clashed with local officials, which led to him being dismissed once, but he was reappointed due to his outstanding military leadership. He was skilled in negotiating with the indigenous peoples, and in 1690 he repelled a British army that attacked New France from the south, laying the foundations for the defense of New France. It is said that the reason New France, which had an overwhelmingly smaller population than the British colonies to the south, was able to withstand repeated attacks by the British until the middle of the 18th century was due to the success of Frontenac's defense organization. He was a contemporary of J. Talon and priest F. Laval, and New France was at its peak during this time.
