The capital of Nam Dinh Province in northern Vietnam. It is located 75 km southeast of Hanoi. It has a population of 190,500 (2003 estimate). It is the central city of the Song Khoi River Delta and has long been a distribution center for rice and other products from the surrounding farming villages. National Route 10 and the Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh railway line run through the city. It has been the center of the textile industry since the French colonial period, and the cotton and silk weaving industries are still thriving today, with over 10,000 textile workers. Industries such as electricity and chemical fertilizers, and handicrafts such as lacquerware, matting, and copper products are also thriving. During the Vietnam War, the city was destroyed by the US Air Force, but was reborn as a modern city after the war.
