Namche Bazar (English name)

Japanese: ナムチェ･バザール（英語表記）Namche Bazar

A village in the Soru-Khumbu district of Sagarmatha Zone in northeastern Nepal. Population: about 1200. It is located on the slopes of Mt. Everest, at an altitude of about 3400m. It is newer than the surrounding villages, which are mainly agricultural and livestock-related, and has little arable land. Formerly a trader's village, trading Tibetan rock salt, wool, dairy products, and local livestock for rice and industrial products from India and southern Nepal, but now the village is increasingly important for the residents' livelihood and income from work as a high-altitude porter and guide for mountain climbing. It is the gateway to the Khumbu Himal mountain range, which is centered on Mt. Everest, and has a foreigners' checkpoint, post office, telegraph office, etc.
