The highest peak in the Assam Himalayas. 7,762m (7,755m) above sea level. It is located at a bend in the Tsangpo River, upstream of the Brahmaputra River. It is the easternmost point of the Himalayas, and the Himalayan range is usually defined as extending from this mountain to Nanga Parbat near the Indus River in the west. It was discovered in 1912, and the Tibetan name meaning "lightning that scorches the sky" was adopted the following year. Gyala Peri (7,150m) rises to the north, across the great canyon of the Tsangpo River. [Takayama Ryuzo] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
