Volgo-Ural'skii Neftegazonosnyi Bassein (English spelling)

...Originally limited to the Volga River in the west and the foothills of the Ural Mountains in the east, new oil wells are now being developed far west of the Volga River, and the area is expanding further. As natural gas also gushes out, the area is called the Volga-Ural'skii neftegazonosnyi bassein, and it spans the three republics of Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, and Udmurtia, as well as Saratov, Volgograd, Simbirsk, and Kirov oblasts. The oil wells have been known to Volga towmen since the 18th century, and many exploratory drilling attempts were made in the early 20th century, but without success.
