1840‐88
An Ottoman enlightenment thinker and constitutionalist. His contact with Sinasi opened his eyes to modern Western civilization, and in 1865 he founded the New Ottoman Society with his comrades, aiming to establish a constitution. He later went into exile in Paris and then London, where he published the newspaper Liberty. After returning to the country, he continued his anti-dictatorship movement despite oppression, including exile. After the establishment of the Midhat Constitution in 1876, he was briefly involved in central politics, but died in obscurity when autocracy was reinstated. オスマン帝国の啓蒙思想家，立憲主義者。シナーシーとの接触により西洋近代文明に目を開かされ，1865年同志とともに，憲法制定を目指す新オスマン人協会を設立。のちパリ，さらにロンドンに亡命し，そこで《自由》新聞を刊行。帰国後も流刑などの弾圧の中で，反専制運動を継続した。76年のミドハト憲法制定後，一時政治の中枢にかかわったが，専制政治再開により不遇のうちに没。詩，小説，戯曲も多数ある。【新井政美】
