1840‐88 An Ottoman enlightenment thinker and constitutionalist. His contact with Sinasi opened his eyes to modern Western civilization, and in 1865 he founded the New Ottoman Society with his comrades, aiming to establish a constitution. He later went into exile in Paris and then London, where he published the newspaper Liberty. After returning to the country, he continued his anti-dictatorship movement despite oppression, including exile. After the establishment of the Midhat Constitution in 1876, he was briefly involved in central politics, but died in obscurity when autocracy was reinstated. He also wrote many poems, novels, and plays. [Arai Masami] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
