1917‐51 Vietnamese novelist. His real name was Tran Huu Tri. Born into a middle-class farming family in Ha Nam Province in northern Vietnam, he received his primary education in Nam Dinh City, then self-studyed to obtain a high school diploma and became a teacher in Hanoi. In 1940, he lost his job when his school building was requisitioned by the Japanese army, and lived off the shoulders of writer To Hoai, working as a private tutor while publishing short stories about the lives of intellectuals and farmers in magazines such as The Seventh Novel. In 1941, he established his foothold in the literary world with the publication of the novella Chi Pheo, which exposed the injustice and hypocrisy of the colonial regime.
