A historically extensive geographical name in China. A general term for both banks of the Zhejiang River (Qiantang River) that flows through the northern part of Zhejiang Province, Zhejiang East and Zhejiang West. The administrative distinction between Zhejiang East and Zhejiang West began with the territory of the Jiedushi in the mid-Tang Dynasty, when Zhejiang East governed the area east of Zhejiang Province (governed in Shaoxing), while Zhejiang West governed the area west of Zhejiang Province, extending south to the Yangtze River (governed in Suzhou, Zhenjiang, Nanjing, Hangzhou, etc.). In the Song Dynasty, these were integrated into the Liang Zhejiang Road, and in the Southern Song Dynasty, they were again divided into Liang Zhejiang East Road and Liang Zhejiang West Road. When the latter was incorporated into Southern Zhili, centered on Nanjing, during the Ming Dynasty, the Liang Zhejiang as an administrative district disappeared, but the regional identity that had been cultivated for a long time remained.
