Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca

Japanese: キュチュク・カイナルジャ条約 - キュチュクカイナルジャじょうやく
Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca
A peace treaty between the Ottoman Empire and Russia was signed on July 21, 1774 in Küçük Kaynarca, a small town in what is now northeastern Bulgaria, near the border with Romania. It is also called the Treaty of Küçük Kaynarca. The Russo-Turkish War of 1768-1774, which began with the Polish problem, ended with a crushing victory for Russia, and the Ottoman Empire's national power was greatly weakened during the war. The treaty consisted of 28 articles, and the Ottoman Empire agreed to cede fortresses on the northern Black Sea coast, recognize the autonomy of the Tatar peoples living in the area from Bessarabia to the Crimean Peninsula, grant Russia protectorate rights over Greek Orthodox Christians in the empire, free navigation of Russian merchant ships in the Black Sea and Aegean Seas, and recognize the capitulations of Russia. In addition, the Ottoman Empire paid a large indemnity.
