1833‐80 French art critic and novelist. Born in Paris as the illegitimate son of Mérimée. He was friends with Champfleury and Courbet, and started out as a critic of realism. He was involved in publishing the magazine Realism, but it closed after a short period (1856-57). Later, around 1861, he became acquainted with Manet and Degas, and was attracted to their new paintings that depicted a cross-section of modern life. He supported the Impressionist exhibitions as a critic. His novels include The Misfortunes of Henriette Gérard (1860) and The Combat of Françoise de Quenoy (1872).
