Scientism - kagakushugi (English spelling) scientism

Japanese: 科学主義 - かがくしゅぎ（英語表記）scientism

A term given to a part of the philosophy of empirical positivism. The position of Mach and Avenarius is usually called scientism. Based on the basic idea that all propositions are either empirical or analytical, and that all empirical propositions ultimately become propositions of the natural sciences, it asserts that philosophical discussions must always be based on natural science assumptions. Of course, the assertion that philosophical discussions must always be based on logical analysis (broad-sense logicism) can also be derived from the above idea, and these two assertions can be said to have had a major influence on the development from logical positivism to analytical philosophy in the 20th century.

経験主義的実証主義の哲学の一部に対して与えられる用語。通常マッハやアベナリウスの立場が科学主義と呼ばれる。すべての命題は，経験的であるかまたは分析的であり，かつ経験的命題は究極的にはすべて自然科学の命題となる，とする基本的な考え方に基づき，哲学の議論はつねに自然科学的な前提に立って行われなければならないと主張する。もちろん，哲学の議論はつねに論理分析でなければならないという主張(広義の論理主義)も，上の考え方から導き出すことができ，この二つの主張は，20世紀における論理実証主義から分析哲学への展開の上に，大きな影響を与えたといえる。
