1851‐1937 Turkish poet and man of letters. Born into a family of scholars in Istanbul, he worked as a bureaucrat and diplomat while also being active as a poet and playwright for about half a century from the Tanzimat period, the period when modern Turkish literature was established, to the Republic period. As a representative poet of modern Turkey, he built the foundations of modern Turkish poetry. His works include the poem collection "Tomb" (1885), the play "Finten" (1918), and many others.
