In 1869, when Ezo was renamed Hokkaido, it was one of the eleven provinces established. It is a grain-producing region from central to western Hokkaido, with the Ishikari River running through the center. It included nine districts: Ishikari, Sapporo, Yubari, Kabato, Sorachi, Uryu, Kamikawa, Atsuta, and Hamamasu. It later came under the jurisdiction of the Hokkaido Development Commission's Sapporo Head Office, and then Sapporo Prefecture and the Hokkaido Prefectural Government.
