A calculus formed by calcium deposition in the efferent duct of the submandibular or parotid gland. Small foreign bodies or bacteria often become the nucleus, and it is not formed by saliva stasis or concentration alone. It occurs most frequently in the submandibular gland, and the main symptoms are colic-like pain when eating and swelling of the salivary gland. Although the calculus may pass naturally, it is often necessary to remove the calculus through an incision in the oral cavity or to completely remove the gland through an external incision.
