Awashima Mono - Awashima Mono

On this day, the Awashima Hall in the grounds of Sensoji Temple in Tokyo is crowded with many visitors.
[Awashima Mono]
This refers to a group of works that were created when the customs of Awashima gannin were incorporated into Kabuki dance as faith in Awashima became widespread. The first of these is said to be "Awashima Sonou no Take," which was performed at the Edo Ichimura Theater in leap July 1759 (the 9th year of the Horeki era) and is recorded in the "Chronology of Modern Japanese Music." The story is said to be about Ichimura Kamezo's Kanto Koroku, who becomes an Awashima gannin and enters the red-light district, where he engages in romantic acts with the prostitute Ogishi, played by the first Nakamura Tomijuro.
