In Babylonian-Assyrian mythology, he is the patron deity of writing and the god of vegetation. His name seems to mean "the one who calls" or "the one who shines." He is the son of Marduk, and is responsible for writing the votes of the gods in the Inscription of Fate, at the beginning of the year at the festival of Zagmukh, when the fate of humans for the year is decided. He was given this role because he and his wife Tashmetome invented writing, and he also oversaw literature. His sanctuary was at Borshpa, and in Marduk's temple, Esangira, there was a chapel called Ezida. His name is not found before the First Babylonian Dynasty. He appears in the Old Testament as Nebo.
