...In 1857 (Ansei 4), he changed his name to Takeshiba Genzo, and in 1865 (Keio 1), he changed his name to Katsu Genzo. While working as an assistant to his teacher's works, together with his colleague Takeshiba Toji, he wrote kusazoshi (Japanese traditional stories based on stories) that were based on his teacher's original stories, such as Edo Sakura Kiyomizu Seigen (Edo Sakura Kiyomizu Seigen), published in 1858, under the names Genzo, Kotohiko, and Kawaryusha. In 1868 (Meiji 1), after his teacher retired, he became the lead playwright at the Ichimura Theater, but due to financial difficulties and an invitation from Otani Tomoemon, he moved to Osaka, and in 1871 his Soma Yoshikadomebae Bundan (Soma Yoshikadomebae Bundan) was well received for its Tokyo-style adaptation. *Some of the terminology used in reference to "Edo Sakura Shimizu Seigen" is listed below.
