Chantilly - Chantilly (English spelling)

A residential and resort town in the Oise department in the Île-de-France region in northern France. Population 10,902 (1999). It is located 42 km north of Paris, on the northern edge of the Bois de Chantilly, on the banks of the Nonette River. In the 18th century, it was known as a producer of lace and ceramics, and was the headquarters of the French army during World War I. To the northeast of the town is the Château de Chantilly, once the residence of the Duke of Condé (1643-1830) surrounded by beautiful gardens, and now the Musée de Condé (home to the famous Book of Hours Most Sumptuous of the Duke of Berry). To the southwest of the town is a horse racing track, known for its June races and training center. It is also a popular tourist destination.

フランス北部、イル・ド・フランス地方オアーズ県の住宅・保養都市。人口1万0902（1999）。パリの北42キロメートル、シャンティイの森の北の外れ、ノネット川の河畔に位置する。18世紀にはレース織と陶磁器の産地として知られ、第一次世界大戦中にはフランス軍総司令部が置かれた。町の北東には、かつてコンデ公の居城（1643～1830）であり、みごとな庭園に囲まれたシャンティイ城があり、現在はコンデ美術館（有名な『ベリー公のいとも豪華なる時祷書(じとうしょ)』を所蔵）となっている。町の南西には競馬場があり、6月に行われるレースや調教センターとして知られる。観光の名所でもある。
